Notes: This afternoon, I had to pop into town to go to the bank and run a few errands. I took a few shots in the High Street and waited for various characters to walk into the frame. As soon as I saw this lady with her two back-lit carrier bags, I knew I had the picture of the day.

Notes: This week’s 52 Themes 2009 topic is Technology. I have been struggling with it a little all week. Then yesterday I was backing up my recent photos from the Laptop to an external drive when I got the dreaded message “Disk full”. I had been expecting it for a while, so resolved to hot foot it into town this morning to buy a new high capacity drive. I came away with a rather nice shiny Seagate 1.5Tb box. Yes, that’s 1,500Gb or 1,500,000Mb. That set me thinking how storage media have changed over the past 10 years or so, and I dug around a few hidey holes in my cupboards to retrieve these bits and pieces. In order of capacity we have:

  • 1.44Mb 3.5″ floppy drive (under the MD)
  • 100Mb Iomega ZIP 100 removable floppy drive (second from bottom)
  • 160Mb MiniDisc (under the CompactFlash)
  • 700Mb CD-R (on top of DVD-R)
  • 1Gb CompactFlash (top of stack)
  • 4Gb USB stick (top RHS)
  • 4.7Gb DVD-R (on top of Iomega drive)
  • 80Gb external hard drive (on top of CD/DVDs)
  • 1.5Tb external hard drive (bottom of stack)

How times have changed. I am just sorry I couldn’t lay my hands on a 5.25″ floppy drive as well!

Notes: This is a lovely quiet spot by the River Blackwater near Wickham Bishops, showing the old wooden railway viaduct which formed part of the now defunct Witham to Maldon branch line. The undergrowth is beginning to take over – I liked the different greens and the recession of the viaduct planks.

Notes: If there’s one area of photography which I don’t enjoy, it’s Portraiture. And if there’s one area of photography at which I’m particularly bad, it’s Self-Portraiture. So when the 52Themes2009 subjects were announced, I looked down the list and inwardly groaned at the thought of Week 24. While it doesn’t explicitly insist on the “self” aspect, I also know that I’m going to be really busy until the deadline (next Thursday) and probably won’t have time to set up a meeting with any willing friends (co-erced by the promise of food or drink) or go roaming anywhere interesting for a candid shot. Ah, well, I guess I better just bite the bullet and go for a shot of muggins then. I know it’s not a very original idea, but you’ve got to cut me some slack!

Notes: I went to one of my regular monthly business networking lunches at the Anglia Ruskin University in the centre of town today. And I knew that this week’s 52Themes2009 was Architecture, and I’d not really got anything decent so far, so I took the opportunity to take some images of this striking glass-clad building while the sun was out. It is part of the Ashcroft International Business School. The reflective metallic stripes on the glass are the same stuff which attracted my attention on Day #443 at the Sally Army.

Notes: I went with friends to see the new Star Trek film this afternoon, at the IMAX in London (it was excellent). It was the first time I’ve actually set foot in the place – bizarrely located in the middle of a roundabout just opposite Waterloo Station. We took a few minutes to find the right subway to get in – and we were greeted by some rather funky uplighting in the tunnel. It all looked very Star Trek – and I thought it might fit this week’s 52 Themes 2009 subject, Texture.

Notes: After much delay, my 2008 – A Year In Pictures Blurb book finally arrived today. And I have to say, it’s been worth the wait! The Blurb software allows you to lay out and self-publish your book. I ordered it back at the beginning of February, but they have been having some delays with their Economy Shipping, so have recently changed their contractor. Hopefully, any books ordered in the future won’t take 8 weeks to arrive. And, in a fit of shameless self-promotion, I shall use this for this week’s 52 Themes 2009 – A Good Book / Literature. You can see some more pages on Flickr. If you can’t blow your own trumpet, then who will? ;-)
