Day #623

Day #623 Title: Obelisk
Location: Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire
Camera: Canon EOS 30D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: A very busy day today. I started off with a meeting in Cambridge, which gave me the opportunity to meet my friend Victoria in the town for lunch afterwards. We have known each other since we were 11, and do see each other reasonably often, so we decided that a nice lunch would be fine for our 40@40 get-together. Then I had a bit of time to kill before my next meeting and took the opportunity to take a walk around some paths between Little Shelford and Harston, where I found this obelisk. It’s curious history is revealed here. Then it was off to another couple of meetings. No rest for the wicked and all that…

Day #622

Day #622 Title: Guardians
Location: Highgate Cemetry, London
Camera: Canon EOS 30D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: One thing that my 40@40 challenge has given me is a good excuse to finally get around to doing things I’ve been promising to do for ages. Today, I met up with friend Simon to do another one on the list – we visited Highgate Cemetry for a tour and some photography. It’s a fascinating place, with many interesting nooks and crannies to see. The Western Cemetry is only accessed via a guided tour, which was very informative. This image was taken at the mausoleum of Julius Beer, which is  the largest memorial in the cemetry. The impressive doors are cast bronze and have marvellous decoration and a lovely symmetry.

Day #554

Day #554Title: The Shameful Shadow
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 30D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: I knew I was in for a long day sat in front of the computer today, so I stuck my nose out into the garden just after breakfast to see what the weather was like. I immediately noticed the sun casting this shadow of a weed onto the Snow Lantern in my Japanese garden. Unfortunately, at the moment, rather than being as well-groomed as it was on Day #146, the garden is now looking rather more like it did on Day #216! Hence the shame…

Day #441

Day #441Title: Projected Shadow
Location: Bush End, near Takely
Camera: Canon EOS 30D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: You can be forgiven for thinking that I spend a lot of time hanging around graveyards. I know I’ve posted pictures from two in the last three days, but that’s purely co-incidence! Today I found myself passing the very pleasant All Saints Church at Bush End. The architecture and round tower attracted me to stop in the first place. But once I was wandering around, I noticed how the fading evening sun was projecting a giant shadow from one monument onto another gravestone. It was only fleeting – 5 minutes later and it had sunk too low. Good job I caught it when I did.
