Day #1821 Title: Face Down December (Festive Tree Edition)
Location: Margate, Kent
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 10-22mm EF-S f/3.5-4.5 USM
Notes: A little bit of Face Down silliness to toast in the season! Merry Christmas! And of course, it’s the perfect shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #12 – Once A Month – December.

Day #1812 Title: Tappety Tap
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 20mm f/1.7
Notes: Many years ago I learned to touch type, so I don’t often look at the keyboard – usually concentrating on the monitor instead. When I got my new laptop, I realised it’s the first one I’ve had with backlit keys so you can type in the dark – all a bit pointless if you’re not looking at the keyboard! But I did think it would make a good shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #54 – Hands At Work.

Day #1801 Title: Tread Softly
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Notes: I woke to unexpected snow this morning! So after a large, warming bowl of porridge, I put on my walking boots and pottered outside for a few pictures. I then realised what an interesting tread pattern my boots have – so here we are, something showing evidence of where I’ve been – perfect for Treasure Hunt #78 – Footwear.

Day #1795 Title: Heavenly Bodies
Location: Ingatestone
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Notes: I have been meaning to try my hand at some star trails for most of the year, as it is Treasure Hunt theme #45. Tonight was finally the night! Very cold, I first had to scrape ice off the car before I went anywhere this evening! Then I headed to a spot which I hoped would be reasonably free of light pollution. Wrong! It didn’t help that there was a full moon, which pretty much overwhelmed any images made looking east, especially with the 10-22mm wide angle. So I tried my hand looking west, with the 100mm prime, in the hope of accentuating the stars’ movement in the  sky. Thanks to this excellent article on how to choose your exposure, I got some good initial pictures quite quickly. Then it was just a case of waiting. This is a composite (stacked with the free Startrails.de software) of 50 x 30s exposures @ f/2.8 and ISO 160. I took more, but the later images were obscured by thin high cloud, so I discarded them. Originally I was rather annoyed that I’d randomly chosen a region of the sky where aircraft regularly pass, but when I built the stack, I actually quite like the result (the straight lines on the left)! I was also amazed at how vivid the different colours are for each star trail. I nearly froze to death, but I’ll be having another go soon (probably when the moon is new).

Day #1793 Title: Face Down November (Inclement Weather Edition)
Location: Heybridge Basin
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 10-22mm EF-S f/3.5-4.5 USM
Notes: This wasn’t the location I originally had in mind for this month’s Face Down Tuesday. Initially I was going to shoot it at Paper Mill Lock which is about 5 miles from home, but I tried driving there today only to find the road closed due to severe flooding. No chance of getting anywhere near. So I journeyed further down the canal – all 13 miles – to the outlet at Heybridge Basin where it empties into the Blackwater Estuary via a tidal lock. Hardly a soul about today – and not surprising – due to the persistent drizzle. I was lucky to get this in the bag and drive home again before the deluge started in earnest once more.

Day #1788 Title: Staccato Spin
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D /  10-22mm EF-S f/3.5-4.5 USM
Notes: Another physiogram session this evening with better torches. Not only did I get one with a narrower beam, I also found one with a UV LED, so thought I’d have fun with that too. As these marvellous patterns are governed by the laws of Physics, I thought it would make a great practical illustration for Treasure Hunt Theme  #59 – Scientific.

Day #1784 Title: Chalk & Flint
Location: Broadstairs, Kent
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mmEF f/4 L IS USM
Notes:  Julian & I made the most of the beautiful sunny weather today by taking a long stroll on the beach at Broadstairs, followed by ice cream and lunch in Ramsgate. Along the way we found a large rockfall from the cliff, where the rough round chalk nestled at the cliff foot with pieces of smooth, knobbly flint. It really showed how the different properties of the rocks behaved in the face of constant attrition from the sea. I thought this made a great find for Treasure Hunt Theme #31 – Rocks & Stones.
