Day #1823

Day #1823 Title: Broadstairs Prom
Location: Broadstairs, Kent
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: This afternoon we took another walk, this time along the prom at Broadstairs. Pity the weather was a bit grim, but we did enjoy a warming hot chocolate at Morelli’s on the seafront afterwards.

Day #1787 Title: Fulham Sunset
Location: Fulham Palace Road, London
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: I walked from Hammersmith to Fulham this evening to get my iPhone repaired at iFixPhone. They offer a great while-you-wait service. On the way I noticed a spectacular sunset playing itself out to the west, and made this quick image as a jet passed by overhead, on its way to Heathrow.

Day #1783 Title: A Bleak Outlook
Location: Broadstairs, Kent
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mmEF f/4 L IS USM
Notes:  This morning I headed down to Margate to visit my friend Julian who’s just moved there. We enjoyed a sociable but wet afternoon in a local café with some other friends before munching a fish and chip supper. This evening we decided to go and see the latest Bond film, Skyfall, at the tiny local cinema in Broadstairs. This view was made as the light was fading into the deep blue dusk. We were looking out across the bay towards Bleak House, made famous by the Dickens novel.

Day #1745 Title: Light Fantastic
Location: Maldon
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mmEF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: I spent a very enjoyable afternoon in Maldon in the company of photographic friend Ken "touchingthelight" Scott who is in Essex for a short lecture tour. We met up for a late lunch in the pub and lots of photographic chat before taking a wander around the Hythe. The light was kind to us, as it can be in the late afternoon during the Autumn. I’ve photographed this spot many times before but it seemed to zing with a light fantastic this afternoon – it must be Ken’s influence!

Day #1740 Title: Green Tranquility
Location: Wickham Bishops
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 20mm f/1.7
Notes: Today was a little more overcast, but we managed to avoid any rain during our geocaching walk. This is the lovely little wooden viaduct across the River Blackwater just south of Witham, which used to support the Witham to Maldon branch line before Dr Beeching’s axe fell. I love the peacefulness of this location – which we last visited (again on a geocaching mission) on Day #564.

Day #1739 Title: A Blowy Day At The Seaside
Location: Southend
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 20mm f/1.7
Notes: We fancied a trip to the seaside today, so headed to Southend. It was quite sunny but also very windy, and at one point we had to take refuge in a seafront café for tea, toasted teacakes, and ear-thawing. We chickened out of walking the full length of the pier (1.25 miles each way) and instead opted for the rickety train ride instead. Here you can see a train just departing the seashore station on its trundle towards the pier head.

Day #1731 Title: Fuji-san Beckons
Location: In the air above Japan
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: The long trek home started with a 5:45am alarm this morning, but it all went smoothly and I was able to get the train to the airport and onto the plane without any hassles. Throughout my trip, whenever possible, I’ve been trying to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji (or Fuji-san as she is known in Japan). Until now, she’s always been elusive, hiding behind the clouds without a hope of seeing anything. So imagine my surprise when there she was, head poking up above the fluffy white, visible over the wing a few minutes after takeoff. She seems to be beckoning me to return one day and see her up close. I will! I will! Read more about my stay.
