Day #1802 Title: A Splash Of Claret
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Strobist: 2 x YN560’s through perspex from rear, @ 1/32; 1 x YN560 through persepx from below and behind, @ 1/32.
Notes: A few weeks ago on Day #1764, soon after I first got my Splash Art Kit, I was trying to achieve this shot. For various reasons, it didn’t work out. So today I thought I would revisit the subject to see if I could get it right. Eventually, it all came together. Cheers!

Day #1799 Title: Pink Milkshake
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Strobist: 1 x YN560 from above each side, through pink and blue gels @ 1/64
Notes: I was giving a talk and demo this evening on my liquid splash photography with the Splash Art Kit. I always like to give it a go before packing it up to take on the road, just to make sure it all works. I tried using milk for my tests today, with mixed success. This is the 1% fat variety, which worked reasonably well. Later on I tried full fat, which wasn’t half as good as I’d expected – far too blobby and the collisions just weren’t happening as much. More experimentation needed, perhaps.

Day #1782 Title: Sunset Splash
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Stroblist: 2 x YN560′s through coloured gels @ 1/64, both shooting through milky perspex from the rear; 1 x YN560 from RHS @ 1/64 through Opteka gridded snoot
Notes:  This evening I gave my High Speed Flash & Water Splash talk and demo at Ingatestone CC. So this afternoon I had a quick session in the studio to check all the gear was working before packing it up and setting off for the club. Now I’ve managed to get a big enough drop tank, I can capture some great reflections of the splashes in the water. I liked the colour combination for this one. Read my full review of the Splash Art Kit.

Day #1777 Title: Purple & Pink Splash
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Strobist: 1 x YN560 @ 1/64 through purple gel, 1 x YN560 @ 1/64 through pink gel, both through milky perspex to rear
Notes:  A late night splash session produced some good results at last. When I tried collision shots before, I was using just water, from too small a drop height, and was having trouble with shutter lag. This time I used 20% corn syrup solution dropped from about 20cm into water, with a little Rinse Aid in the drop zone. And I found the mirror lock-up function on the 7D which meant the shutter lag was negligible. Soon I was getting lots of interesting shapes – then it was a case of playing around with lighting and drop size/timing to see what happened. Read my full review of the Splash Art Kit.

Day #1764 Title: Cheers!
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 60mm EF-S f/2.8 USM
Strobist: 2 x YN560 from behind shooting through milky perspex @ 1/64; 1 x YN560 from right side through DIY softbox @ 1/64
Notes: After work I had the chance to play a bit more with my Splash Art kit. I was having trouble timing the flash going off, still much to learn. This is not the shot I originally wanted, but I ran out of time as the clock bonged midnight and I had to be content with what I’d got.

Day #1762 Title: Gold & Blue Crown
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 60mm EF-S f/2.8 USM
Strobist: 2 x YN560 from behind through yellow and blue gels @ 1/32, shooting through milky perspex; 1 x YN560 from right side through Opteka gridded snoot @ 1/64
Notes: Today I finally got some time to play with my new Splash Art II Kit which I collected from Joe Dyer at High Speed Photography on Thursday. It’s a great kit which means I can start making pictures really quickly, rather than an awful lot of setup which is required with my Arduino kit. I’ll still use that from time to time, but I’m looking forward to experimenting with this new equipment. I also re-organised my studio to give me a dry zone for making toy pictures and other macro shots, while keeping the splash kit set up in the wet zone. This was a simple crown made with water and a few drops of rinse aid in the splash zone to give longer tendrils. Read my full review of the Splash Art Kit.
