Day #1491 Title: Space Shuttle Atlantis
Location: Kennedy Space Center, Florida
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 IOS
Notes: Well, where do I start? We had a brilliant day at Kennedy Space Center today. It’s been 19 years since my last visit, and wanting to return was my main reason for coming to Florida again this year. We were just so lucky with our timing – since Atlantis landed for the very last time last year, tour buses have been stopping and letting visitors go inside the massive Vehicle Assembly Building to see the shuttle. But for around 10 days only, the VAB housed two shuttles – Atlantis AND Endeavour, before Endeavour gets shipped off to Washington for display. So we were able to have our pictures taken with both! And we met an astronaut who told us all about his 4 missions on board. The VAB may well be closed to visitors again for another 30 years very soon, when Atlantis gets put in its new museum at KSC which they have just started building, and they begin to prepare for NASA’s next space vehicle Orion. There was also the enormous Saturn V rocket display from the Apollo missions. All in all, a day to remember. I spent most of it with Neil Armstrong’s famous words ringing in my ears: “It’s one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind”. What a picture to add to my collection for the Treasure Hunt theme #57 – An Inspiring Quotation. See more images from KSC.
