Day #3319Title: The Soundtrack To My Life
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX7 / Lensbaby Composer Pro / Double Glass Optic 50 mm f/2 / Creative Bokeh Kit
Notes: I’m rather upset today, having just heard the news that John Wetton, one of my all-time favourite singer/songwriters, died this morning after a long battle with cancer. I’m not normally one to get gushy about celebrities, but John’s music has been the soundtrack to my life for 35 years, in various guises as a solo artist and in bands such as Asia and Icon. It was characterised by thoughtful lyrics, soaring melodies and full-bodied harmonies, tied together with John’s distinctive roaming bass lines. Not everyone’s taste, I admit, but I am grateful for his prodigious talent which has entertained me for so long. It was also a great privilege to meet the members of Asia, including John, when I saw them live in Toyko in 2012, on Day #1730. He was a gracious gent and very generous with his time after the show. RIP John. I just had to pay tribute with a picture of my own 5-string bass. I must play it more (I’m terribly out of practice, but John was one of the reasons I love the bass so much). Anyway, it also fits with the Treasure Hunt Theme #40 – I Am Grateful For…

Day #3318Title: Fan-Tastic
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM / Yongnuo YN-14EX Macro Ring Flash
Notes: Another busy day at home, with lousy weather outside, so this was a late night shot in the studio for Treasure Hunt Theme #29 – Fan. I bought it in Japan when I visited in 2012. The background is Japanese washi paper, complete with a fan motif too. Of course, I love the purples.

Day #3316Title: Rainbow Branches
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GH3 / Panasonic 100-300mm f4.0-5.6 Lumix G Vario Power OIS
Notes: After a long session in the studio this morning getting the shot I wanted for my Minions 52 project this week, I didn’t feel like doing much else in the way of complicated setups. So I had a late lunch and was just contemplating what to do next while sitting on the sofa, when I looked out of the window and noticed a big fat rainbow playing out across the sky. I grabbed the long lens and made this simple shot of the bare branches silhouetted against the colours. Job done! Sometimes, fortuitous things happen if you let them.

Day #3315Title: Red Chaos
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM / 2x Yongnuo YN 560 Speedlites through textured film, from behind
Notes: I had another play with my Splash Art Kit this evening in my studio. I was trying to get much bigger splashes this time, using slightly thinned mixture, a magic ingredient and a higher dropping distance. With mixed success. The best shaped shot of the day wasn’t quite sharp enough in the important places, so this one turned out to be the one I chose for PoTD. The wibbly shapes on the background come from a textured piece of semi-transparent film.

Day #3314Title: Dusk In Dystopia
Location: Barbican, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX7 / Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 Lumix G II ASPH
Notes: Several members of my Daily 365 group of Flickr have recently posted some rather effective landscape images with a touch of Intentional Camera Movement. I’ve not seen many landscape opportunities for my own pictures which would suit ICM, but today I was inspired to have a go at some shots in an urban environment. I was in London for an evening meeting and around dusk, when the lights are all coming on, is a great time to wave the camera around. This image was one of many taken from the Lakeside Terrace at the Barbican, looking across the water towards the little church of St. Giles, Cripplegate, dwarfed and surrounded by modernist high rise buildings on three sides. I thought the final picture looked rather like the fictional dystopian Gotham City, which seems to be coming alive before our eyes, across a rather bigger pond.

Day #3313Title: Routemaster Reflections
Location: Wivenhoe Park, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX7 / Lensbaby Composer Pro / Sweet 35mm f/2.5
Notes: I was in Colchester again today to give a couple of training sessions for clients this afternoon and evening. But I had a bit of time this morning for a very cold and foggy walk around Wivenhoe Park, the campus for the University of Essex. Dad worked there for many years before he retired, and I used to know it well, but I haven’t visited and had a good walk around for at least 10 years. It has changed quite a lot since then, with new buildings springing up all over the place. This is a reflection of the new Students’ Centre in one of the big lakes. I liked the way it was cantilevered to apparently float above the water. I was also very surprised to see the old Routemaster bus in the distance – it was a long way from home! But “home” is now apparently here as a static snack bar selling bacon butties to passing students. It provided a welcome splash of colour in an otherwise fairly limited palette.
