Day #3545Title: Dusk At ARU
Location: ARU, Chelmsford
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: This evening I attended a WordPress meetup at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford. The building is quite striking with its iridescent colour-changing stripes – last photographed on Day #528!

Day #3544Title: Victory On High
Location: Colchester, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I was in Colchester this evening for a geocaching meetup. There is a new Virtual Cache (no phyiscal box, but you have to answer some questions after visiting a location) at the War Memorial opposite Colchester Castle. It’s a fine bit of architecture which I’ve been familiar with for donkey’s years, but today’s mission made me look at it again with more detail. Funny how the familiar can become more worthy of scrutiny given a suitable prompt!

Day #3543Title: Renovations
Location: Mountnessing, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Looks like the Windmill in Mountnessing is getting some attention. It looks rather sad all dressed up in scaffolding!

Day #3535Title: Fulbourn Windmill
Location: Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Back on dry land today, Alistair and I took a trip to the Fulbourn area of Cambridgeshire to find a couple of specific geocaching puzzles which we had been working on. The first was about Electronics Theory where you had to solve a circuit diagram to find the box. This contained a kit to actually make another temporary circuit on breadboard, which we needed to decode some more co-ordinates for a second box. Great fun for us geeks and mission accomplished. I drove home and Alistair headed back north from our day out. This is Fulbourn windmill, a prominent landmark on a hill at the outskirts of the village, looking splendid in the late afternoon sunshine.

Day #3534Title: Piracy On The High Seas
Location: Red Sands Fort, Thames Estuary
Camera: GoPro Hero 4 Silver / GoProPole / GoPro App
Notes: I have wanted to visit Red Sands Fort in the Thames Estuary ever since I found out about the existence of these Maunsell Forts several years ago. About 18 months ago, I also discovered there was a geocache hidden at Red Sands too, so it immediately shot up the Bucket List of places to visit. Fast forward to April this year when I was chatting to a geocaching friend who decided he wanted to organise a trip to the forts. It was all set for early May but the day before our departure, our charter boat developed gearbox trouble and the outing had to be postponed. Well, it’s been a long wait but today was the day! I met up with nine other excited cachers at Two Tree Island and we were ferried in a small tender to the Girl Mandy for our excursion on a modest fishing boat which is usually employed as a charter vessel for sea fishing trips. Red Sands is about 12 miles offshore from Leigh-on-Sea, so it took a couple of hours to chug each way. But we had a fantastic time. Usually to claim a geocache find you have to sign the official log sheet in the container, but special circumstances here mean that boats aren’t always able to moor safely, so we were allowed to log a “find” if we could post a selfie taken under the towers. Job done – and what a brilliant outing! The forts are beginning to look the worse for wear in places. Project Redsand has been set up to try to preserve them but I’m not sure how far they have got with this endeavour. I can only imagine what it must have been like to live and work up there during WWII. They are very eerie and decrepit now, but were once bustling with life. They make a great shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #60 – Spooky.

Day #3523Title: The Walkway
Location: King’s Cross, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I have seen photos of this location before, but never realised where it was. I happened across it today while I was changing trains at King’s Cross after a meeting in north London. I like the colourful panels, which change colour every few seconds. Waiting for a few commuters to come into view provided some human interest.

Day #3501Title: Library Lines
Location: Shoebury, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Shoebury has a swanky new library. Its roof is quite funky – looking rather splendid in the sunshine today.
