Day #3385

Day #3385Title: Géocaching Sans Frontières
Location: Adinkerke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Continuing my little geocaching trip abroad, today I drove to Belgium to find some new caches and have a ride on my fold up bike. There was a great series of 45 caches which straddled the Franco-Belgian border in a big circuit on back roads and cycle paths. It took me a little over 3 hours to complete. The weather was fantastic. Here’s my bike propped up in Belgium, while I’m standing in France (just). The convenience of open borders is something we are going to miss terribly when we’re out of Europe. For the moment, I’m making the most of it.

Day #3384Title: La Maison De Dieu!
Location: Audinghen, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: On Tuesday, the day after my new passport arrived, I made a snap decision to have a little trip to France and Belgium to do some geocaching, as I’d never visited either country since starting to look for tupperware. So I booked a very last minute trip and found myself on the Le Shuttle today, finally making it onto French soil around tea time (there were a few things I needed to do before leaving home, and then there was a tedious hour and a half delay in the crossing). I headed along the French coast towards Cap Gris Nez and found myself at this remarkable little church, Eglise Saint Pierre d’Audinghen. It was rebuilt in 1960 after being destroyed by allied bombing during World War II. The first striking thing is its huge concrete open bell tower in the shape of a lyre – which is what initially made me stop to take a look around. The porch is illuminated by this wonderful stained glass verse from Matthew VII. The sun was catching the letters at just the right angle to throw some fantastic coloured shadows on the paving. There was even a cache by the gate! Perfect. I knew it had to be picture of the day.

Day #3382Title: European Driving Essentials
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 45mm f2.8 Leica DG Macro-Elmarit ASPH
Notes: It’s years since I drove my own car abroad (although I did have a hire car when I visited Spain in 2014) so I needed to stock up on a few essential items which are required to drive in France: High-viz jacket, GB sticker, headlamp deflectors and two breathalyser kits! Yes, I’m on my way to the continent on Thursday after arranging a very last-minute trip.

Day #3381Title: All Points Of The Compass
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 45mm f2.8 Leica DG Macro-Elmarit ASPH
Notes: I have been meaning to get my passport renewed for ages – the previous one expired in April 2015! Last week I finally pulled my finger out, stopped prevaricating, and completed the paperwork. This morning, I was delighted to take delivery of a shiny new 10-year UK/European Union passport, even if the UK doesn’t last that long in the EU! It finally means I can explore further afield again. Hmmmm. Where shall I go?

Day #3355Title: TMA-19M
Location: Science Museum, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: We went to London today, primarily for an event taking place this evening, but we decided to catch the train around lunch time so we could spend the afternoon in the Science Museum’s Robots exhibition. It was all about the history of robotics, which was very interesting. We also took the time to have a look in some of the other galleries, and made a special effort to find ESA Astronaut Tim Peake’s Soyuz capsule, TMA-19M, which has recently been added to the collection. The tiny capsule took him to the ISS and back during his historic Principia mission last year. Both Alistair and I are space geeks, so we spent quite a bit of time having a look at it. This is the view into the capsule through the navigation porthole. It made a perfect shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #28 – Exhibition.
