First Adventure With A DSLR

Taken by Caz on Saturday, 7th February 2004

In February 2004 I got my first Digital SLR – a Canon EOS300D, about the same time a friend also got one, and we spent a great day roaming about on the South Bank in London. Here are my best shots from the day:

Proximity
Title: Proximity
Location: City of London
Camera: Canon EOS 300D / Canon 18-55mm EF
Notes: I was interested in the juxtaposition of styles here – the venerable old stone Georgian architecture, in close proximity to the sleek modern glass of the Gherkin.

Movie Tag
Title: Movie Tag
Location: London Bridge
Camera: Canon EOS 300D / Canon 18-55mm EF
Notes: Walking across London Bridge, I came across this graffiti tag which had been scrawled on the shiny metal handrail. I liked the colour pop treatment.

Life Imitates Art
Title: Life Imitates Art
Location: South Bank
Camera: Canon EOS 300D / Canon 18-55mm EF
Notes: The real tree is the art, or is it the artificial one?

A Girl In Pink
Title: A Girl In Pink
Location: South Bank
Camera: Canon EOS 300D / Canon 18-55mm EF
Notes: I was lining up my shot of City Hall when she came trotting down the stairs. Colour pop again emphasised her and made her stand out from the blue tones background.

House Of The Rising Sun Title: House Of The Rising Sun
Location: Tate Modern, London
Camera: Canon EOS 300D / Canon 18-55mm EF
Notes: The Weather Exhibition was an installation in the spectacular main Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern on London’s South Bank. A fast ISO equivalent film speed helped to capture the misty atmosphere in the hall.

Deux At La Défense

Taken by Caz on Wednesday, 21st April 1999

Japan Bridge Title: Japan Bridge
Location: La Défense, Paris
Camera: Canon EOS 100 / Vivitar 19-35mm EF
Film: Ilford FP4 125
Notes: The symmetry of the bridge and its position spanning between two huge office blocks was what attracted my attention. This was one of the 15 images I used to gain my ARPS distinction in 1999.

Sihouettes On The Steps Title: Sihouettes On The Steps
Location: La Défense, Paris
Camera: Canon EOS 100 / Vivitar 19-35mm EF
Film: Ilford FP4 125
Notes: I was looking at the composition of the steps when the two figures came into view at the top. I waited until they were on the brink of stepping onto the flight before taking the shot. Another one of the 15 images I used to gain my ARPS distinction in 1999.

A Trio From Docklands

Taken by Caz on Sunday, 26th October 1997

South Quay Footbridge Title: South Quay Footbridge
Location: South Quay, Docklands
Camera: Canon EOS 100 / Canon 75-300mm EF
Film: Ilford FP4 125
Notes: There used to be this wonderful footbridge at South Quay in Docklands. It had a marvellous S-curve as it snaked its way across the water to the other side. The people add an extra dimension to the picture, they are placed in a dominant position on the bridge and lead the eye into the frame. This view was taken from the stairs leading up to South Quay DLR station – which has now been boxed in. It doesn’t matter though, because when the Jubliee Line extension via Docklands was built, they filled in half of this quay and chopped the bridge up. So, another image which cannot be repeated now. I’m glad I saw it in its heyday in 1997. It helped me gain my ARPS in 1999, so I definitely have fond memories of it.

Vaulted Roof Title: Vaulted Roof
Location: Canary Wharf DLR Station, Docklands
Camera: Canon EOS 100 / Vivitar 19-35mm EF
Film: Ilford FP4 125
Notes: The roof structure at Canary Wharf station on the DLR has often fascinated me. I wanted to show the patterns in the canopy and lighting in an abstract manner. The low viewpoint and wide angle lens have helped to exaggerate the perspective of the curves. Another which helped me gain my ARPS in 1999, so I definitely have fond memories of it.

Vent Tops Title: Vent Tops
Location: Canary Wharf Shopping Centre, Docklands
Camera: Canon EOS 100 / Vivitar 19-35mm EF
Film: Ilford FP4 125
Notes: The tops of these vents made a striking subject for a picture, with the background pair echoing the larger foreground example. The diagonal formed by the escalator leads the eye in towards the main subject. Yet another which helped me gain my ARPS in 1999, so I definitely have fond memories of it.

Rigging

Taken by Caz on Sunday, 14th November 1993

Rigging Title: Rigging
Location: Sarasota, Florida
Camera: Canon EOS 600 / Sigma 21-35mm EF
Film: Kodak Elite 200
Notes: A day’s yatching was the perfect opportunity to take some shots of the crew in action. Here, I was right underneath the mast as the girl was pulling up the rigging, and using a wide angle lens empahised the height of the mast and exaggerated the perspective.
