Day #1622 Title: Vintage Commute
Location: North Weald
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: Dad and I visited the newly-reopened Epping to Ongar Railway this afternoon. It last saw passenger service as part of the London Underground Central Line in 1994, when this part of the line closed. Dedicated volunteers have worked hard to restore the line which now runs a steam and diesel service, plus vintage buses each weekend. Although the weather was a bit iffy to begin with, it was a good outing to scout for possible scenic locations to photograph the steam at a later date. This carriage was what took us from North Weald to Ongar behind a little green tank engine. It struck me how much room you used to get in 3rd Class – one seat on the right, and two on the left. These days you have to cram five bodies into the same width with 2+3 seats across in modern “cattle class”. I’d rather go back to this, even if it did have rather bouncy springs! I can almost remember this vintage of carriage on early trips to London I made 25+ years ago. I thought this would make a good shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #35 – Memories.

Day #1620 Title: Gloomy Forecast
Location: New Broadcasting House, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 IOS
Notes: Terrible weather today in London, and more to come. This is a neon-illuminated decoration in one area of the new newsroom at New Broadcasting House. I thought it summed up the weather quite well.

Day #1617 Title: Thinking Outside The Box
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 60mm EF-s f/2.8 USM
Notes: Lots of catching up to do today after my weekend in Paris. I left my picture making until the last minute, so had to think outside the box to get something before the clock chimed midnight.

Day #1616 Title: Les Fontaines de Beauborg
Location: Beauborg, Paris
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: The morning after the night before, and what a trek! We stopped for food on the Champes-Elysées at around 2am, most glad of the rest and sustenance. Just as we left around three, the heavens opened and dumped a huge thunderstorm on us for the next two hours. We abandoned sunrise (what sunrise?) at Trocadéro and sheltered under a bridge for a while. Eventually several of the group headed back to Gare du Nord for their early train, but five of us stayed on for more punishment. We caught some breakfast in Notre Dame, walked to La Musee d’Orsay for a look around and lunch, then back via the Louvre. Our final stop was Beauborg and the Centre Georges Pompidou. These colourful fountains are next door in Place Igor Stranvinski. I’d visited them before in 1995 but not been back since. Finally a long trudge to the RER and Gare du Nord. Once on the Eurostar, our heads hit the seats and we were out like lights for three hours! VERY tiring, but good fun, despite the weather. Read more about the trip.
