Day #1749 Title: Dharma Resolve
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 60mm EF-S f/2.8 USM
Strobist: 1 x YN560 from left, 1 x YN560 from right, both through Stofen softbox @ 1/64; 1 x YN560 from behind through Stofen softbox @ 1/128
Notes: I bought this curious looking fellow from Japan, having no idea what it was. I’d seen them at a shrine in Kurashiki and posted a picture to Flickr, where one of my contacts explained that they are lucky omens. When you set yourself a goal, you colour in one eye and when your goal is reached, you are allowed to colour in the other one. So I have resolved that I will go back to Japan some day, and I’ll take Dharma along with me to colour in his other eye when I get back to Kurashiki, where I shall leave him with his brothers and sisters at the shrine 🙂

Day #1735 Title: Tiny Box Of Treasures
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 60mm EF-S f/2.8 USM
Strobist: 1 x YN560 from left, 1 x YN560 from right, both through Stofen softbox @ 1/64
Notes: I messed up over the weekend and took a virtually flat battery to Brighton for my Lumix – despite there being a fully charged one at home in the studio. So I had to wait until I got home again this evening for today’s shot – quick macro of a beautifully delicate little Japanese box made from Washi paper, which I bought myself while on holiday.

Day #1733 Title: Red, White & Purple
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 IOS
Notes: Another busy day, visiting Mum & Dad first thing to tell them all about my holiday. I got home this evening just as Alistair arrived from Newcastle. So by the time we’d eaten and sorted a few things out for our early start to Brighton tomorrow, it was getting late. This was a grab shot in the studio of my lovely Japanese paper parasol, as modelled on Day #1723!

Day #1731 Title: Fuji-san Beckons
Location: In the air above Japan
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: The long trek home started with a 5:45am alarm this morning, but it all went smoothly and I was able to get the train to the airport and onto the plane without any hassles. Throughout my trip, whenever possible, I’ve been trying to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji (or Fuji-san as she is known in Japan). Until now, she’s always been elusive, hiding behind the clouds without a hope of seeing anything. So imagine my surprise when there she was, head poking up above the fluffy white, visible over the wing a few minutes after takeoff. She seems to be beckoning me to return one day and see her up close. I will! I will! Read more about my stay.

Day #1730 Title: Access All Areas
Location: Shibuya Kokaido, Tokyo, Japan
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: One of the reasons I have stayed so long in Japan for this trip is the British band Asia. In the mid-1990’s, I met my Japanese friend Tomoo via the Asia email discussion group and we have kept in touch ever since. I’ve been a fan of the band since their first album in 1982, when I was too young to be going to gigs on my own. Then they split for a while, with some of the members carrying on with a different vocalist, or pursuing their own solo careers and joining other bands in the meantime. They reformed a few years ago with the original 4 members, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton, and have released some great new albums since then. But I had never seen them play live in all that time. So when I told Tomoo about my visit, he advised that if I stayed on for another week after the date I had initially planned to go home, I could see Asia start their 30th Anniversary Tour in Tokyo with two shows! And what’s more, he could get me on the guest list and a backstage pass to meet the band afterwards, as he knows their manager. Of course, I jumped at the chance! So here I am – grinning like a fool – with John Wetton (one of my all-time favourite artists), after the second of two fantastic Asia gigs at the Kokaido. It’s been 30 years in the waiting but what a brilliant way to end my Japanese adventure! Read more about my stay.

Day #1729 Title: The Wall Of Sake
Location: Meiji-jingu, Tokyo, Japan
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 10-22mm EF-S f/3.5-4.5 USM
Notes: I took a trip to Yoyogi Park via the National Gymnasium at Shibuya this morning. Don’t worry, I wasn’t exercising – merely taking some pictures of the iconic building which was erected for the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo! After wandering in the quiet of the park for a while I headed for the Shintō shrine at nearby Meiji-jingu, where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken are deified. This wall of sake barrels is part of the offerings made to the shrine every year by the Meiji Jingu Nationwide Sake Brewers’ Association. The Emperor was a great supporter of Japanese industrial development, and, I suspect, a sake connoisseur. Early evening, I headed to Shibuya Kokaido to meet Tomoo and see the first night of Asia’s 30th Anniversary Reunion tour. It was a great show, but more on that tomorrowRead more about my stay.

Day #1728 Title: The View From The 10th
Location: Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: Another wet and windy day today, so I decided to stay snug in my room, put my aching feet up and sort some of the hundreds of photos I’ve taken during my trip. This was the view from my window mid-morning. Read more about my stay.
