Day #1737 Title: Mobile Comms
Location: Littley Green, Chelmsford
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GF1 / 20mm f/1.7
Notes: We headed north of Chelmsford for our geocaching adventure today, and ended up doing a 6-mile walk near Littley Green, including a rather civilised stop at the pub for lunch! We passed this old phone box, its phone long ripped out by BT, and it had a notice on it saying it was now owned by the council. Heaven knows what they are going to do with it – preserved it somehow hopefully. But we thought Alistair was rather out of place inside, with his mobile. How times have changed in the last 20-odd years – we all used to rely on these iconic red boxes when we needed to get in touch whilst out and about. I thought this would make a good shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #53 – Out Of Place.

Day #1730 Title: Access All Areas
Location: Shibuya Kokaido, Tokyo, Japan
Camera: Canon PowerShot G12
Notes: One of the reasons I have stayed so long in Japan for this trip is the British band Asia. In the mid-1990’s, I met my Japanese friend Tomoo via the Asia email discussion group and we have kept in touch ever since. I’ve been a fan of the band since their first album in 1982, when I was too young to be going to gigs on my own. Then they split for a while, with some of the members carrying on with a different vocalist, or pursuing their own solo careers and joining other bands in the meantime. They reformed a few years ago with the original 4 members, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton, and have released some great new albums since then. But I had never seen them play live in all that time. So when I told Tomoo about my visit, he advised that if I stayed on for another week after the date I had initially planned to go home, I could see Asia start their 30th Anniversary Tour in Tokyo with two shows! And what’s more, he could get me on the guest list and a backstage pass to meet the band afterwards, as he knows their manager. Of course, I jumped at the chance! So here I am – grinning like a fool – with John Wetton (one of my all-time favourite artists), after the second of two fantastic Asia gigs at the Kokaido. It’s been 30 years in the waiting but what a brilliant way to end my Japanese adventure! Read more about my stay.

Day #1722 Title: Sumo Makuuchi Ceremony
Location: Ryōgoku Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 70-300mm EF f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM
Notes: Today I went to see the Grand Sumo Tournament at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan with my friend Tomoo. It’s the first time he had been to see it live, although he does watch the coverage on the TV. During the tournament, each fighter will wrestle once a day over the 15 days of competition, against a different opponent each time. There are various grades of fight, the less experienced Sumo fight first thing in the morning while the highest grade – Makuuchi – come on mid-afternoon. They parade around in their ceremonial aprons and form a circle before their bouts begin. I thought this really showed the flavour of the physiques on show!! The fights are quite short – just a couple of minutes usually. And it’s the first one to make a mistake (step out of the ring or land on the ground) who loses! I thought this would make a great shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #74 – Masculinity. Read more about my day.

Day #1715 Title: Ō-Torii, Miyajima
Location: Miyajima Island, Hiroshima, Japan
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: This morning we embarked on an excursion to Miyajima Island, to visit the big red Torii gate which stands in the sea, and wander around the place. There was a refreshing breeze on the ferry, but the sun was in full force by the time we got to the island. The gate is very impressive and is well known throughout Japan as a place of pilgrimage for the Shintō religion. After an enjoyable lunch with the group, we headed back to the mainland and had some free time this afternoon. I was planning a walk along the river, but just before I got there it started to pelt with rain. Even though I huddled under my umbrella, I still got quite soggy on the half-mile walk back to my hotel. Never mind, the weather has been kind so far, so I can’t complain (and it was a bit cooler as a consequence). Four of us headed out to a little local restaurant this evening for dinner, not straying too far from the hotel for fear of another deluge! Read more about my day.

Day #1707 Title: Ikebukuro Bicycle Boy
Location: Ikebukuro, Tokyo
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: Having landed safely at Narita airport this morning and taken the train into central Tokyo by lunchtime, I arrived at my hotel with a few hours to spare before I could check in to my room. So I left my cases with reception and went for an explore in the local neighbourhood of Ikebukuro. It’s a vibrant corner of Toyko with plenty of unfamiliar sights and sounds to take in. I liked this boy quietly reading his mobile phone standing in front of the colourful advertising banners. Read more about my day.
