Day #2137

Day #2137Title: Yew Leaves And Raindrops
Location: Copped Hall, Epping
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Notes: This was taken during a Natural History study day at Copped Hall, a semi-derelict stately home near Epping which was destroyed by fire in 1917. We managed a walk around the grounds and walled garden, despite the worsening rain. Waterproofs all round – including for the camera! I liked the contrast between this little yew leaf and the wet grass below.

Day #2124Title: Golden Rivulets
Location: Great Notley
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Notes: After a lack-lustre photo walk in Great Notley Country Park this afternoon, I thought I would have to choose one of the images I made then as picture of the day, but the thought wasn’t filling me with much enthusiasm. This evening, after my photo club meeting, I noticed the moisture patterns on the roof of my car, lit by the nearby street lights. Much better.

Day #2025Title: Time’s Running Out
Location: At home
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Strobist: 1 x YN560 from RHS, through Stofen diffuser @ 1/64
Notes: Another late night picture. I was short of inspiration and felt the clock ticking. Then remembered this pocket watch which we found in a box of jeweller’s tools owned by my Grandfather. I hadn’t really looked at it closely before, but noticed today that the dial says Montgomery Bros., Los Angeles, Cal. I wondered what an engineering draughtsman from Leicester (who had never visited the States) was doing with one of those! But he did work at Gents’, the famous clock makers in the City, for many years. A bit of Googling also unearthed an interesting article and photo of the Montgomery Bros. shop run by James Andrew Montgomery from around 1888. I also found information on the origins of the Montgomery watch dial as patented for use on US railroads by Henry S Montgomery. Whether the two were related, I wasn’t able to establish, but I would be intrigued to find out more.

Day #2017Title: What Lies Within
Location: Galleywood Heritage Centre
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 100mm EF f/2.8 L IS USM
Notes: It was another scorching hot day today and I was getting very warm in my office. So I took an hour off this afternoon and went to Galleywood Common to see if I could find some pictures for the day. I went into Galleywood Heritage Centre for a sit down, tea and cake, which was very tasty! And then I found this showy Poppy in the little garden they have there.
