Day #2492Title: Seaside Panes
Location: Worthing, West Sussex
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 17-40mm EF f/4 L USM
Notes: A lovely sunny day meant I was able to visit four piers for my Piers of the Realm project today. This little panel of artworks is on the windbreak on Worthing Pier. I loved the juxtaposition of each picture, along with being able to see right through some panes to the view beyond. A headless passer-by walked into the middle frame just in time! The screen is a bit of a visual obstacle, so a good shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #69 – Obstacles.

Day #2461Title: Saltburn Sights
Location: Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Cleveland
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 17-40mm EF f/4 L USM
Notes: We spent a lovely afternoon at the seaside, photographing the pier at Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the way home from Newcastle to Essex. The Victorian Cliff Lift, a magnificent little funicular railway, takes you from the top of the cliffs down to the promenade and the pier below.

Day #2409Title: Angry Clouds On Anglesea
Location: Beaumaris Pier, Anglesea
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 70-200mm EF f/2.8 L USM
Notes: After spending the night in Bangor, I headed across the Menai Straight to Beaumaris on Anglesea to visit the pier this morning. The clouds were rumbling overhead and there was a deluge for a while – but I took refuge in a café opposite the pier to sample their scones and tea while the rain came down. A short visit to Llanfair PG followed for my self portrait – the last stop of the day before heading home, a long drive but thankfully uneventful.

Day #2408Title: Lovely Llandudno
Location: Llandudno Pier, Clwyd
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 17-40mm EF f/4 L USM
Notes: I took a big detour on the way home from Leeds today, visiting the North Wales coast for a couple of days to see some more piers for my project. My first location was the sad sight of the crumbling Colwyn Bay Pier, whose future is about to be decided by a High Court ruling (the council say it’s theirs and want to knock it down, the former bankrupt owner says it’s rightfully his and wants to restore it). The judgement was due this coming Friday (but has been put off yet again), so it was a case of visit quickly in case the decision to pull it down goes ahead! After that, it was a happier location of Llandudno, where the sun came out as you can see here. My final stop for overnight was Bangor where I strolled on the delightful Garth Pier as the sun went down.

Day #2405Title: Golden Sands By The Pier
Location: Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 17-40mm EF f/4 L USM
Notes: I drove up to Leeds today to stay with friends for a weekend event, but decided to catch another couple of piers along the way. My first location was Skegness (a new pier for me) and then a few miles up the coast to Cleethorpes where I enjoyed a lovely cake and pot of tea in the Tides restaurant on the pier. When I arrived the sun was shining, so I made the most of the light while it lasted. The heavens opened just as I was leaving on my final leg of the journey to Leeds – great timing!

Day #2389Title: Bucket And Spade Weather
Location: Southwold Pier, Suffolk
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 17-40mm EF f/4 L USM
Notes: Another sunny day pier-spotting. I moved on from my overnight stay in Great Yarmouth a short distance down the coast to Lowestoft to visit the two piers there – South and Clarence – and then the final stop of the day in Southwold. I have visited this one before but not specifically for the Piers project, so it was worth a re-visit as I was passing. There were plenty of folks out enjoying the sunshine.

Day #238Title: Circling Gulls
Location: Cromer Pier, Norfolk
Camera: Canon EOS 5D MkIII / 17-40mm EF f/4 L USM
Notes: I planned another expedition to visit some piers in East Anglia today. My first stop of the day was Cromer on the North Norfolk coast – I was delighted that the sun was shining again. The gulls added a nice touch in the sky. After a brief stop off to have a cuppa with a friend near Wroxham, I finally arrived in Great Yarmouth to see the two piers there, Wellington and Britannia.
