Day #3624

Day #3624Title: The Red Tarp
Location: Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation, Paper Mill Lock
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 45mm f2.8 Leica DG Macro-Elmarit ASPH
Notes: It was a bit grey first thing, but the sun came out by mid-morning. A friend was coming over for lunch so we headed out to Paper Mill Lock to have a sandwich and some very tasty cake at the little lockside café. Then a quick walk along the towpath, avoiding the worst of the muddy patches. This boat was wrapped up well for the winter – the red tarp popped against the blue sky reflected in the water.

Day #3566Title: Hello, New Friend
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: So here we are, a shiny new (to me) motor – a 2014 VW Polo in Red (of course). The old car never really had a name, but this one has insisted I call him Charlie as his registration ends with a C. Who am I to argue? I hope we have as much fun together as I did with my old friend.

Day #3564Title: Goodbye, Old Friend
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: It’s a sad day. My old X-Reg Volkswagen Polo has been rather unreliable over the past few months and has cost me quite a bit recently. So I have decided to trade it in for a newer model. I’ve driven over 150,000 miles in this trusty steed, we’ve had some great adventures together. I take it to the garage today and get my new one tomorrow. There’s a strange pang of loss mixed with excitement at new possibilities…

Day #3562Title: Hit The Buffers
Location: Mangapps, Burnham-on-Crouch
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I had a walk on some paths near Burnham today. I passed the end of the line for Mangapps Railway Museum – you can’t go any further this way! Sadly, there weren’t any steam trains running today.

Location: Colchester, Essex

Notes: I spotted this canine driver parked up and waiting for his passenger to come back. It just had to be pic of the day.

Day #3534Title: Piracy On The High Seas
Location: Red Sands Fort, Thames Estuary
Camera: GoPro Hero 4 Silver / GoProPole / GoPro App
Notes: I have wanted to visit Red Sands Fort in the Thames Estuary ever since I found out about the existence of these Maunsell Forts several years ago. About 18 months ago, I also discovered there was a geocache hidden at Red Sands too, so it immediately shot up the Bucket List of places to visit. Fast forward to April this year when I was chatting to a geocaching friend who decided he wanted to organise a trip to the forts. It was all set for early May but the day before our departure, our charter boat developed gearbox trouble and the outing had to be postponed. Well, it’s been a long wait but today was the day! I met up with nine other excited cachers at Two Tree Island and we were ferried in a small tender to the Girl Mandy for our excursion on a modest fishing boat which is usually employed as a charter vessel for sea fishing trips. Red Sands is about 12 miles offshore from Leigh-on-Sea, so it took a couple of hours to chug each way. But we had a fantastic time. Usually to claim a geocache find you have to sign the official log sheet in the container, but special circumstances here mean that boats aren’t always able to moor safely, so we were allowed to log a “find” if we could post a selfie taken under the towers. Job done – and what a brilliant outing! The forts are beginning to look the worse for wear in places. Project Redsand has been set up to try to preserve them but I’m not sure how far they have got with this endeavour. I can only imagine what it must have been like to live and work up there during WWII. They are very eerie and decrepit now, but were once bustling with life. They make a great shot for Treasure Hunt Theme #60 – Spooky.
