Day #3865Title: The Stages Of Decay
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: A quick shot from the garden today. The castor oil plant sheds its leaves regularly so there’s usually a brown one lurking under the healthy ones.

Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: This is Dolphin Point, a new Micropolis module I built the other day. The dolphin sculpture is a large feature in the grounds of this luxury block of apartments! You can’t miss it…

Day #3863Title: Simmering Nicely
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Putting a chicken in the slow cooker is my idea of easy cooking – leave it for 12 hours and it’s done to perfection! Yum.

Day #3862Title: 1(1) 2 3 4 5
Location: Great Portland Street, London
Camera: Apple iPhone 5s / Rear Lens, 29mm f/2.2 equivalent
Notes: As a dyed-in-the-wool morgenmuffel, having to arrive at work in central London by 8am on a Saturday is my idea of hell, but needs must when the bills have to be paid. The alarm went off at 5am, and I crawled out of bed. Thanks to the trains being relatively thin on the ground at that time on a Saturday, I could either arrive 25 minutes early or 10 late. I chose to be early. But at least the walk from Great Portland Street tube to Portland Place was quite and cool at that time. I stopped by the door of No. 115 to make this picture – I liked all the letterboxes at different levels. We have seen a corner of this mosaic floor before, back on Day #1625.

Day #3861Title: And The Rain Came At Last
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 45mm f2.8 Leica DG Macro-Elmarit ASPH
Notes: It finally happened! RAIN! What a relief. I went and danced around in the garden. Here’s a big fat splash landing on my fence.

Day #3860Title: On Liberty…
Location: Portland Place, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I had to go into London for a short but necessary meeting today – one of the hottest this year so far! I left plenty of time so that I wouldn’t be rushing about in the heat. Once I arrived at Broadcasting House, I noticed this statue of George Orwell by sculptor Martin Jennings had appeared. It was erected in November last year, and I don’t think I’ve been past this location since, so it was a surprise to see it. I liked the shapes made by the hard shadows on the wall. The inscription, one of Orwell’s quotes, is worth thinking about too…
If Liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear”

Day #3879Title: Summer Salad
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: It’s still so hot I barely know what to do with myself. But having just got home from a week away, one of the things I needed to do was go food shopping. I came back with the ingredients for this delicious summer salad. Yum.

Day #3878Title: 101 Blue
Location: Nene Valley Railway, Wansford
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: It was time to drive south again today. As it turned into rather a long journey due to an accident on the M11, I was glad I chose to stop off for a sandwich and stretch my legs for a late lunch at the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford. I also had a quick wander around the yard, spotting this rather fine Swedish Railways Class B 4-6-0 Express locomotive, No. 101. It was built by Nyquist and Holm in 1944, and saw service until 1958, after which it was mothballed for military reserve until it was finally scrapped in 1979. The NVR bought it and restored it, and it is apparently a favourite of film makers – did you know that it was this loco, disguised as an East German engine, which demolished a Mercedes in the James Bond film Octopussy? Nope, neither did I until I read the info board next to it! Anyway, this is a great shot for 52 Weeks 2018 – Topic 17, Blue.

Day #3857Title: Sokol
Location: Hancock Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: This morning Alistair and I went to the Hancock Museum to have a look at the Sokol spacesuit worn by Britain’s first astronaut, Helen Sharman. It’s a great piece of space memorabilia which is on display in Newcastle as part of the Great Exhibition Of The North, which celebrates artistic and technological creations and people from the North of England. Helen was born in Sheffield and did her undergraduate degree there. It’s great to have such a pioneer who studied at my alma mater!

Day #3856Title: The Pearl
Location: Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Here’s another Newcastle shot from higher up – this time taken out of the window of Commercial Union House looking north along Pilgrim Street towards New Bridge Street. I’m not sure which deluded fool named the “monstrous carbuncle” ahead The Pearl, but they seem to be a bit of an optimist!
