Day #3862

Day #3862Title: 1(1) 2 3 4 5
Location: Great Portland Street, London
Camera: Apple iPhone 5s / Rear Lens, 29mm f/2.2 equivalent
Notes: As a dyed-in-the-wool morgenmuffel, having to arrive at work in central London by 8am on a Saturday is my idea of hell, but needs must when the bills have to be paid. The alarm went off at 5am, and I crawled out of bed. Thanks to the trains being relatively thin on the ground at that time on a Saturday, I could either arrive 25 minutes early or 10 late. I chose to be early. But at least the walk from Great Portland Street tube to Portland Place was quite and cool at that time. I stopped by the door of No. 115 to make this picture – I liked all the letterboxes at different levels. We have seen a corner of this mosaic floor before, back on Day #1625.

Day #3860Title: On Liberty…
Location: Portland Place, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I had to go into London for a short but necessary meeting today – one of the hottest this year so far! I left plenty of time so that I wouldn’t be rushing about in the heat. Once I arrived at Broadcasting House, I noticed this statue of George Orwell by sculptor Martin Jennings had appeared. It was erected in November last year, and I don’t think I’ve been past this location since, so it was a surprise to see it. I liked the shapes made by the hard shadows on the wall. The inscription, one of Orwell’s quotes, is worth thinking about too…
If Liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear”

Day #3856Title: The Pearl
Location: Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Here’s another Newcastle shot from higher up – this time taken out of the window of Commercial Union House looking north along Pilgrim Street towards New Bridge Street. I’m not sure which deluded fool named the “monstrous carbuncle” ahead The Pearl, but they seem to be a bit of an optimist!

Day #3855Title: Late Night On Pilgrim Street
Location: Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: It’s been a long time since the last one (2011) but today was the start of BarCamp Nort East #5. Alistair was organising, with a little help from various local geeks (and me). It was a great success, and felt like the BarCamps of old with a really friendly atmosphere and plenty of talks on varied subjects. I attended sessions on SCUBA diving, LEGO Robots which draw random Comic strip outlines, and weird Japanese food & drink, to name a few. Late in the evening we got to have a unique look at the city centre from the roof of the building. Here is the view along Pilgrim street with the junction of Market Street.

Day #3854Title: Hiding In Plain Sight
Location: Quayside, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: We were supposed to be taking it easy today, as we have an early start tomorrow, but we ended up spending most of the day in Newcastle having a very sociable day and meeting up with various friends in several different pubs! Ooops. Eventually we stopped for some dinner before making our way back home. This was the view from the Quayside just as I was heading back to Manors Metro station. I always like the view of the Shiny Slug (Sage in Gateshead), especially at dusk when it is lit up from the inside. The shiny reflective roof seems to melt into the sky as if the slug is trying to hide in plain sight. I thought it made a good shot for 52 Weeks 2018 – Topic 32, A Great View.

Day #3851Title: Lining Up The View
Location: Tynemouth, North Tyneside
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: We went for a windy walk along the harbour wall at Tynemouth today. The clouds were moody above the North Sea and the light was a little overcast, but I still love this view. The rusty rails are actually mounted on top of the wall, but I’m leaning the camera over quite a way to get the angle I wanted, making it look like they are huge. There had been some overnight rain, so the trough between the rails was puddled with water, adding an interesting line of reflection. Perfect for Treasure Hunt Theme #53 – Pier or Jetty.

Day #3836Title: Ferrybridge From Afar
Location: Sutton, North Yorkshire
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Time to go home today, but first I had a drive around east of Leeds, picking up some specific geocaches which were on my list. This is a view of the iconic Ferrybridge Power Station (more readily seen when driving along the A1 in the area). Looking at the map later, I realise that a chunk of North Yorkshire protrudes between West and East Yorks at this point – so I’m in North Yorkshire looking a mile or so into West Yorkshire. Not that you care. Probably… Anyway, I liked the way the large clump of trees in the foreground dwarfed the huge cooling towers behind, which normally dominate the landscape for miles around.

Day #3825Title: Cartwheel Shadows
Location: Bluewater Shopping Centre, Kent
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I had to nip into Bluewater for a brief visit today, on my way to visit friends on the south coast. This wonderful shadow caught my eye and I knew it had to be pic of the day.

Day #3824Title: Neatly Clipped
Location: Chelmsford, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I loved the little flash of light catching the edge of this hedge, in perfect contrast to the dark looming sky beyond.

Location: Chelmsford, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Today’s image was guided by the 52 Weeks themes – and I found this candidate for Topic 27 – A Frame Within A Frame while out and about in Chelmsford.
