Day #3934Title: Whodunnit?
Location: Euston, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: After a relatively trouble-free drive back from Newcastle, I arrived home this afternoon, unpacked the car and headed for the train to London for my monthly LEGO User Group meetup. We were collaboratively building rooms for a 3D Cluedo board. This is the team I was working with, head down, constructing the Dining Room. All good fun!

Day #3925Title: Three Lurkers
Location: Grain Battery Tower, Kent
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: A few weeks ago, geocaching buddy Ian and I cooked up a plan to visit the Grain Battery Tower in Kent, to look for a high terrain cache. It can only be accessed for a couple of hours either side of low tide, as you need to walk out to the tower across a muddy causeway. So a bit of pre-planning was required, and we decided today was a good day for our assault. Ian brought his son Ryan along too, who also enjoys a bit of extreme caching from time to time. Here we are, safely in the tower, but yet to find the cache. It was a great day out, with a few more boxes found as well as this one – and I managed to remain upright for both outward and return journeys across the slippery mud, so I was happy! Good fun and good company.

Day #3898Title: Geocachers Gathering
Location: Foulness Island, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I attended an unusualy geocaching meet up today, on Foulness Island. Foulness is one of those villages which have been taken over by the MOD but are still open occasionally to the public. Today was the last day of opening for 2018. The sun had brought out loads of people, not just our geocaching party, so there were terrific queues not only for the permit to let us onto the island, but also for the refreshments and loos once we got to the Visitors’ Centre. Eventually most of the caching crew arrived and enjoyed tea, cake and a good natter.

Day #3883Title: The Last Dance
Location: Stirling, Scotland
Camera: Apple iPhone 5s / Rear Lens, 29mm f/2.2 equivalent
Notes: I’ve been listening to Runrig’s music for the past 30 years. The time has flashed past. A few years ago they announced that they were no longer going to record any new albums, but still tour for a while. And at the end of last year, they finally announced the dates of their last ever concerts in Denmark, England and Scotland. Today was the very Last Dance, with 25,000 people in the park in Stirling. They have never sounded better. What a wonderful experience to have been there to say goodbye. Thanks for all the great tunes, which will be played for many more years to come – from my CD collection. It’s not quite the same, but it will have to do. In keeping with the slightly misty-eyed view I had all evening, I have run this one through my custom Orton filter, so that it fits for Treasure Hunt Theme #50 – Orton Effect.

Day #3835Title: Family Outing
Location: Saltaire, West Yorkshire
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Today I went out to Hirst Wood in Saltaire with friends Tim & Carolyn and their toddler Bethany. We had a lovely potter about amongst the trees, followed by a walk along the Canal to Roberts Park and a great little picnic in the shade. I caught the three of them in the woods with this shot, perfect for Treasure Hunt Theme #29 – Family.

Day #3819Title: Farewell London
Location: Hammersmith, London
Camera: Apple iPhone 5s / Rear Lens, 29mm f/2.2 equivalent
Notes: A bittersweet Runrig gig tonight, attended with a couple of good friends from Chelmsford, who I’ve known since the late 1990’s. We “met” on the Runrig fan club’s email discussion list and have been friends ever since. This was Runrig’s last ever show in London, with one more in Manchester tomorrow and their final final hurrah in Stirling mid-August. They were sounding better than ever, but have decided they’re getting a bit long in the tooth to keep touring! Anyway, I decided to travel light, and just took some cash and my phone. How times have changed – even just a few years ago, taking photos during the show would have had you thrown out of the venue. But in these days of high quality cameras on phones, they would basically have to chuck everyone out! So I managed to make a few images on my phone during the show. With a slight twist, I decided this would fit the bill for Treasure Hunt Theme #48 – On The Phone.

Day #3806Title: Playtime In The Woods
Location: Thorndon Country Park, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Today I met up with geocaching friend Sue who was visiting Essex from her home in Ireland. I took her to Thorndon Country Park to find some caches, and we had an excellent time chatting away as we wandered the footpaths in search of Tupperware (and in some cases, some rather fine Ammo cans – a rare sight in the geocaching world these days). We found this woodland shelter which had been constructed and decided to pose for a picture.

Day #3761Title: Commonwealth Welcome
Location: Westminster, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: The 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting is taking place in London this week. Given the atrocious Windrush scandal which has now been uncovered, the timing of the meeting could not have been more embarrassing for the government. Good. Anyway, enough on politics – the national flags of the Commonwealth nations caught my eye, a-fluttering on their poles in Parliament Square.

Day #3726Title: That One Must Be Mine!
Location: Castle Hedingham, Essex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Today I attended a lovely party for Ray, one of my geocaching friends, who was having a significant birthday. We got to stay in a big, posh country house, were fed delicious food and wine, and enjoy very convivial company. Here you can see Ray making sure everyone knows which is his cupcake!

Day #3724Title: Five To Four
Location: Holborn, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I was in London today for a couple of meetings. My route on foot took me past No. 1 Oxford Street – better known as Commonwealth House. I had never really noticed this imposing Art Deco building before – but doing some research when I got home, I realise it used to look rather shabby, which is probably why I overlooked it in the past. It has had a face-lift from Orms and now looks quite resplendent with bottle green hexagonal tiles on the curved “prow” and along the sides. Unfortunately, the light was a bit grotty today, so the shot looked better in mono here, but if you follow these links you should see some before and after shots taken by other people.
