Day #3878Title: 101 Blue
Location: Nene Valley Railway, Wansford
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: It was time to drive south again today. As it turned into rather a long journey due to an accident on the M11, I was glad I chose to stop off for a sandwich and stretch my legs for a late lunch at the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford. I also had a quick wander around the yard, spotting this rather fine Swedish Railways Class B 4-6-0 Express locomotive, No. 101. It was built by Nyquist and Holm in 1944, and saw service until 1958, after which it was mothballed for military reserve until it was finally scrapped in 1979. The NVR bought it and restored it, and it is apparently a favourite of film makers – did you know that it was this loco, disguised as an East German engine, which demolished a Mercedes in the James Bond film Octopussy? Nope, neither did I until I read the info board next to it! Anyway, this is a great shot for 52 Weeks 2018 – Topic 17, Blue.

Day #3857Title: Sokol
Location: Hancock Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: This morning Alistair and I went to the Hancock Museum to have a look at the Sokol spacesuit worn by Britain’s first astronaut, Helen Sharman. It’s a great piece of space memorabilia which is on display in Newcastle as part of the Great Exhibition Of The North, which celebrates artistic and technological creations and people from the North of England. Helen was born in Sheffield and did her undergraduate degree there. It’s great to have such a pioneer who studied at my alma mater!

Day #3844Title: Rooftop Flypast
Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 100-300mm f4.0-5.6 Lumix G Vario Power OIS
Notes: My Mum rang me today to let me know that the RAF100 flypast parade of aircraft were likely to be flying over Chelmsford on their way to the Mall and Buckingham Palace any minute. So I grabbed my camera and longest lens, and poked my head out of the back door to see what I could see. A short time later, various planes came streaking across the sky. Unfortunately, they were more over the centre of town than where I live, and quite close to the ground, so they just appeared to be skimming the rooftops. The heat haze also made the pictures a bit blurry, but it’s not every day the RAF buzzes your back door, so this was my shot for today. I also spotted the Red Arrows but they were just in the wrong place for me to get a picture.

Location: At home
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Pottering around the neighbourhood for a quick photo today, I spotted this pleasing pattern in the plastic lens cover of a nearby car.

Day #3827Title: No. 263 Leaving Horsted Keynes
Location: Horsted Keynes, West Sussex
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Over this weekend, the London AFOLs were taking part in the 7th Annual Model Railway exhibition held at Horsted Keynes station on the Bluebell Railway. There were several LEGO train layouts on display, plus some of our other creations. I took along a big collection of my Micropolis models. A great time was had by all and there was the bonus of seeing several steam trains depart each hour from the platform next to where we were exhibiting. Here is South Eastern & Chatham Railway’s No. 263 H Class 0-4-4T leaving Horsted Keynes on an Up service to East Grinstead.

Day #3774Title: Home Time
Location: Westminster, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I get a bit frustrated with the Circle Line in the evening. I can wait 20-odd minutes for a service at Westminster, while 7 or 8 District Line trains flash past, crammed with commuters. If I time it wrong, it can mean almost a 2-hour trip home if I just miss a mainline train at Liverpool Street. They are usually every half hour but in the early evening there is a 40-minute gap. Anyway, today it all came together and I managed to get the earlier train I was aiming for. I made this while waiting (thankfully just 5 minutes) at Westminster tube station.

Notes: Once more, the neighbour’s Sprite is providing some photographic subject matter for the day.

Day #3768Title: The Train Has Left The Station
Location: Liverpool Street, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: Waiting for a tube this morning, I wandered a bit further down the platform than normal and found the old signal box at the end made a good foil for the Roundel and Hammersmith & City Line train just heading in the opposite direction.

Day #3760Title: The Yellow Bicycle
Location: Westminster, London
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: As well as the familiar original blue (now red) “Boris Bikes” for hire in London, a slew of other options have started to spring up around the capital. Ofo is one such, which allows you to hire a bike and leave it anywhere, rather than having to find a docking station like the Boris Bike scheme. I wandered past The Speaker pub on my way to buy some lunch today and spotted the cheery yellow Ofo bike waiting patiently for its next rider outside.

Day #3755Title: Old Workhorse
Location: Borehamwood, Hertfordshire
Camera: Panasonic Lumix GX8 / Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Lumix G X Vario ASPH Power OIS
Notes: I spotted this venerable old contraption today while I was on a visit to BBC Elstree for work. I liked the fact that it’s still in use, doing the thing it was intended for. It’s ancient but has been kept serviceable and useful as a valued piece of equipment. Perfect for 52 Weeks 2018 – Topic 52, Old School.
